- Occupation: Abiola earned his fortune came from publishing, shipping and oil. He was known for his extensive philanthropy.
- Politics: Ran for president in 1993. When unofficial results showed he had a strong lead, Nigeria's military leader nullified the election.
- Family: Abiola had four wives, and "Who's Who in Nigeria" notes he "has many children." The U.S. delegation, led by Pickering, former ambassador to Nigeria, was in the country to meet with Abubakar and to lobby for the release of political prisoners.
